One of the basic things you hear is to always check references when hiring a contractor.However, is this really a good way to determine if a contractor is honest and reputable? I don’t think so. It’s possible the contractor gave you 10 names as references and they are all his friends or employees. Let’s face it no one is going to give you someone’s name for a reference that is going to give them a bad report.
Therefore, we must use other methods for determining the contractors worthiness. Google their name and company name on the computer. People will occasionally report problems they have had with contractors on the computer. Contact the Better Business Bureau and see if there are any negative reports on their site. Check Angie’s List and see if there are negative reports on there. I would not put 100% faith in the positive reports that I read on sites about contractors. Who knows these reports may have been written by the contractors friends or family. However, if you see a negative report it should raise a red flag and be worthy of further investigation.
